The Carabinieri is the fourth Italian military force charged with police duties under the authority of the Ministry of Defense. Carabinieri are the national gendarmerie of Italy, policing both military and civilian populations. It was originally founded as the police force of the Kingdom of Sardinia, the forerunner of the Kingdom of Italy.
