In June 1942 the Germans began a full scale aerial bombardment and artillery shelling of the Soviet fortifications at Sevastopol on the Crimean Peninsula, said to be among the worldβs strongest. 1300 artillery pieces were brought to the siege, and the 60cm mortar Karlβs large caliber munitions gradually turned the formidable Soviet fortress into a pile of pulverized concrete, leading to the Soviet surrender on July 3. This was the largest self-propelled artillery piece in the Germansβ arsenal. The Karl saw its first combat at this siege, two years after its development, and later saw action at the siege of Brest-Litovsk and the Warsaw Uprising. Its tremendous size presented transportation problems; movement by rail involved the Karl being suspended between two specially developed railway cars with five wheel bogies and long-range road movement required a complete breakdown and re-assembly. A total of just six were built.
