The Izumo is a flush-deck escort destroyer/helicopter carrier that entered JMSDF service in March 2015. The entirety of the Izumo’s large flight deck, bow to stern, can be used for flight-related operations. It can carry 14 anti-submarine warfare helicopters and is capable of performing continuous anti-sub and airborne minesweeping operations. For self-defense, the Izumo also carries anti-ship missile countermeasure chaff and flares, launchers for silent anti-torpedo jammers and it’s the first JMSDF vessel to be fitted with the SeaRam SAMII multiple surface-to-air missile launcher CIWS in addition to the standard Phalanx CIWS point-defense system using the 20mm Gatling gun. Designed with stealth capability features throughout, with superb flight operations capacity and with the latest information technology, the Izumo makes useful contributions in natural disasters for rescue and supply operations. It is based at Yokosuka as part of the JMSDF’s Escort Flotilla I, an assignment in which the ship’s powerful maritime defense capability and disaster relief mission versatility see it play a central role.
