The battleship Yamato was the first major battleship constructed after the Naval Reduction Treaty, concluded in 1921 at the Washington Disarmament Conference, became invalid. She carried a 46cal main gun, the biggest at that time, and her 69,000 ton displacement was far greater than the 35,000-ton class of British and American battleships. The Japanese Naval Force believed in quality over quantity and strove to be superior in this regard. Yamato’s initial planning commenced in March 1934 and construction began in 1937. She was launched in December 1941. The huge main gun weighed 2200 tons only for its swivel section and the barrel length was 21m. When the gun was fired at a 45 degree elevation, the shot reached a 41km distance, shooting through the air at over 7000m in height. It could fire twice in a minute. Yamato took part in the battle off the coast of Saipan, the Battle of the Coast of Leyte and the Philippines and the Battle of Okinawa. On her way to the Okinawa Battle, she was attacked by more than 1000 enemy torpedo planes and sank.
