The T-55AMV was the next step in the evolution of armor protection for the T-55, replacing the armor applique package with individually fitted Kontakt-1 Explosive Reactive Armor bricks developed in 1983. These ERA bricks are designed to explode upon contact with anti-tank projectiles, directing the energy of the impact away from the tank.
